Rosedale is located in the middle of Toronto, but it remains a quiet community due to the abundance of trees and foliage in the surrounding area, and in and around its impressive homes Sheriff William Jarvis, and his wife Mary settled South Rosedale in the 1820s. Mary Jarvis, who was fond of long walks and horseback rides, laid the blueprints for what are now Rosedale's meandering streets. Rosedale received its name as a tribute to the abundance of wild roses on the surrounding hillsides of the Jarvis estate. In 1864 the Jarvis family sold the estate, which soon led to the residential development, which remains today. It is geographically located on three protected ravines. Rosedale is home to all-girls school Branksome Hall, Rosedale Public School in central Rosedale, as well as Mooredale House, Rosedale's community centre. Mayfair, Rosedale’s annual spring park party is located in Rosedale Park, and typically consists of rides, games, a flea market and other carnival-type activities. The event is traditionally held on the first Saturday in May and is run and funded by Mooredale House.
Entertainment
Rosedale itself doesn’t have an abundance of restaurants or shopping within its borders, but neighbouring Yorkville boasts Canada’s premier shopping district mere minutes away. If you aren’t inclined to venture too far, Yonge St. north of Bloor is equipped with a variety of shops, restaurants, fitness centers and theatres.
